MEET ALYSSA KOPF
I launched A+ Insight to partner with organizations that are going through times of change – whether that be a bold leap forward or a turnaround after weathering challenges. I think hard projects are fun, and I love bringing a team together to accomplish big goals.
In 2002 I took a detour into the nonprofit sector and fell in love with the business side of philanthropy. Starting at what was a grassroots nonprofit, Community Shares of Colorado, it didn’t take long for me to see the power and privilege structures that dominate the sector. I knew we couldn’t afford to hire the business and finance expertise needed to take the organization to the next level. Never one to back down from a challenge, I resolved that I could not lead social justice change unless I learned the languages of power. I did daily deep dives into technical skills and strategy models, an academic practice of “Googling my way to excellence.” I became a self-taught expert in nonprofit accounting and competitive analysis.
I worked at Community Shares of Colorado for 14 years, as the team increased the organization’s annual fundraising revenue by 500%. I would often ask the team, “What would we attempt to do if we knew we could not fail?” Taking on those audacious goals required deep knowledge of our business model, market positioning, brand promise, and the true capacity of our human and financial resources. Most of all, we wanted to succeed financially without sacrificing our core values. I tackled graduate school to credentialize via capital letters - earning an MBA in 2013.
In 2016, I transitioned to The Denver Foundation and served in expanding operational leadership positions, concluding with Chief Operating Officer. During a seven-year period of staggering financial growth, I led functional areas, including operations, communications, information technology, human resources, and facilities. Where help was needed, I was happy to step in to lead projects and teams. Accomplishments included implementing racial equity principles in hiring, performance management, and compensation frameworks, establishing and scaling virtual operations, rebranding, purchasing and renovating a historic building, and a successful ERP software conversion.
Born and raised in Seattle, I moved to Denver in 1999 for what was intended to be a nine-month stay. Twenty-five years later, I have a deep affinity for the two places I call “home.” I live in Villa Park with my wife and our dog. At home, I enjoy cooking and hosting friends and family. In the wild, I love traveling, music, museums, and learning. My dream job is to be a low-stakes detective similar to Encyclopedia Brown. Until that becomes a financially viable career path, I love working with good people on great projects at A+ Insight.
